SACS Lions Look to the Future
Losing seasons happen sometimes, whether it is a new program or an old team in a slump. The San Antonio Christian Schools (SACS) football fans saw a slump from the Lions’ football team. Head coach Bryan Marmion explained the team’s performance. “A lot of the time we had up to eight sophomores on the field. We were losing close varsity games with a JV team,” said Marmion.
This upcoming season, the Lions will be facing a slightly smaller district with only three teams returning; Texas Military Institute, San Marcus Baptist and Hyde Park, and adding John Paul out of Corpus Christi. With St. Josephs moving to a larger district, Marmion believes the team’s district has gotten a little less tough, but assures fans and players that the schedule is full of many teams that will test the ability of this year’s experienced team. The addition of the Lions’ first public school 3-A opponent, Blanco, will give the team an early chance to measure up to a consistently good team. “You don’t get better by playing bad teams,” said Marmion. This ideology is the motivation for a very competitive pre-district schedule.
“We have ten returning starters on offense and nine returning starters on defense. I know me and the guys are feeling really confident about the season ahead,” explained team leader and current SACS junior Sean Pawelek. With nineteen total returning starters and only twenty-two spots on the field, there will only be three positions to fill… an almost unheard of statistic in high school football. With spring training already in motion, the team is excited to share what seems to be a bright future with the SACS Lions fans.
